Survival of the Mediocre Mediocre

We are reductive by design - that’s the scientific way, after all: divide (then hypothesize, test and model) and conquer. But not every game has simple, predictable and stable rules, so in many real-life situations we’re optimizing for unknown unknowns. In that essay, the author argues that mediocrity may often be the most adequate strategy in such an environment.
